Monday, March 26th, 2012“Porn” at the open mic
Wednesday, January 11th, 2012I was down at the Pengilly’s Open Mic Night on Monday and Rebecca Scott was the host. She announced from the stage that folks would be performing til midnight, but ”please stick around because the barkeep will be pourin’ til 2 AM.” Well, what my ears heard was that there would be “porn” til 2 AM, and I was truly frightened. Most singer/songwriter types strive to bare their souls to their audiences, but this was gonna be too much.
I was imagining that the only thing between me and my audience was going to be a strategically placed dreadnought guitar. And I REALLY wasn’t looking forward to watching the next performer on the list who was just getting out his ukelele with a very short strap.
Forgetfulness
Wednesday, January 11th, 2012I left my purse somewhere in Bodo last Thursday evening and didn’t notice until Wednesday morning. So I spent a good deal of time Friday making phone calls to track it down. I ended up hoofing my way around BoDo and thankfully found it at the second place I inquired. I then discovered I left my glasses at the first place I inquired. Went back to retrieve the glasses, then stopped in at Tully’s for a celebratory cup-o-joe. Left my car keys at Tully’s.
This is all very scary to me, cuz I just purchased an expensive new iPhone. I may just get a piercing, so I will have a way to tether it to my body. A strategically placed safety pin ought to do the trick.
Growing Grass
Friday, April 15th, 2011Ha! You thought I was going to blog about marijuana, didn’t you? Noooo…I’m talking about my lawn! My grass is growing already! Darn TruGreen. They’ve already started the first of their 2000 applications. That was the early pre-spring application. 3 days later they were calling to tell me they were going to come out and give me the post-early-pre-spring app. Next comes the follow-up to the post-early-pre-spring app which will prepare the lawn for the spring-to-summer-transitional app, but in the meantime, I probably need a bill bug prevention app, after the recommended aeration. Enough already. I don’t even want to mow!
Crowded Beds
Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011Thank you to all who expressed condolences this past week. My sister is doing okay. She has a rather large house and it was filled with visiting relatives. That resulted in the sleeping arrangement of me, my sister, and my mother sleeping together in a king size bed. Luckily no one snored…but if one person turned over in her sleep, the other two had to follow suit. It was kind of like synchronized swimming. Raise right arm, roll to the left, bend the knees. We got pretty good at it after a couple of nights.
Life and death
Tuesday, March 15th, 2011Just returned from a funeral. My brother-in-law was killed in a snowmobile accident a week ago. How quickly life can change. And how precious are our relationships. The older I get, the more I realize all the different gifts people have to offer in this life. People hear me perform, and tell me what a gift I have. I’m always pleased to share it in ways that make people’s lives happier. But so many people have less noticeable, but much more valuable gifts to bring the world than I: The trainer at the YMCA who has been given the gift of a healthy body and the personality to inspire others to make themselves healthier; The friend who always senses what others need, and drops what she’s doing to be there for them; A friend who can organize things when the world seems to be falling apart; A grown son who offers unexpected but much needed hugs to his mother. Gifts & blessings galore. Cherish them.
Hair dryers
Tuesday, March 8th, 2011This week saw the death of another hair dryer. I don’t think I’ve ever had one go quietly. Hair dryers really ought to be designed with some type of warning indicator of imminent breakdown, short of setting my hair on fire. My experience is that they work until sparks start flying out the nozzle, or they burst into flames. Ouchy.
The Cat’s nose
Wednesday, February 16th, 2011What happened to my cat’s nose? Saturday morning, my cat came up to me, and her nose was all bloody, the tip was missing, and she had a puncture wound in her face and a scratch. The cat was INSIDE all night!! I can not for the life of me figure out what she got into. She didn’t eat or drink for two days, but I got her to the vet on Monday morning, and they rehydrated her and gave her some antibiotics. She’s on the mend and feeling better. There are two mysteries here: 1) What happened to my cat? 2) Why do pets always get sick on WEEKENDS?
Mental infirmity
Sunday, January 30th, 2011Okay, so today I want to talk about the plethora of little black devices that sit on my studio table. These include: my cell phone, a calculator, a tuner, a metronome, and a stereo remote. When the phone rings I answer the metronome. When I need to add things, I pick up the stereo remote. Some of you can probably relate to advancing-age-induced absent mindedness, but this week I got a little concerned. I actually put the calculator on my knee to tune my guitar, and stared at the zero for about 10 seconds wondering why it wasn’t changing as I tuned my E string! Oh dear.
Paying for groceries
Thursday, October 21st, 2010Another week, and the most exciting thing I did was get caught trying to leave Winco without paying for my groceries. It’s a bit embarrassing to admit that this was not the first time. At least I didn’t actually leave the store this time. A couple of years ago, I bagged up my groceries and headed right out the door to my car. I was wheeling an impressive haul (ninety-five dollars worth) of delicious canned and baked goods through the parking lot before this really, really large checker dude named Ray came running after me. The poor guy. He was in no shape to be exerting himself that way…I almost caused him a heart attack. Anyhow, my groceries are paid for, Ray is not in the hospital and I am not in jail. I guess I have an honest face.
